Reward and learning
Schultz explains how dopamine contributes to learning from expected and unexpected rewards (Schultz, 2016). This gives the project a clearer explanation of why reward-related cues can gain attention.
The six sources in this project examine different parts of the same problem. Instead of treating instant gratification as a simple failure of discipline, they help explain how reward learning, repeated contexts, impulsivity, automatic habits, and delayed rewards can work together.

Grant and colleagues show that behavioral addictions may involve short-term reward, repeated behavior, and difficulty controlling the behavior even without a substance (Grant et al., 2010).
MacKillop and colleagues explain delayed reward discounting as a measure related to impulsivity (MacKillop et al., 2011). Weinsztok and colleagues connect stronger delay discounting to some behavioral addictions (Weinsztok et al., 2021).
Wood and Rünger explain that habits often develop when the same action is repeated in a recurring context (Wood & Rünger, 2016). Lally and colleagues show how repeated behavior can gradually become more automatic in everyday life (Lally et al., 2010).
Dopamine-driven reward learning and instant gratification can affect young adults by making immediate rewards easier to notice and repeat. When the same behavior happens in a familiar context, it can become more automatic. At the same time, long-term goals may feel weaker because their rewards are delayed.
Together, these patterns can make motivation, focus, and consistency more difficult. However, the research also suggests that these patterns are not permanent or simply caused by laziness. Changing cues, reducing easy distractions, starting with smaller actions, and repeating a better response in a stable context can make long-term behavior easier to maintain.
